The Hamilton Watch Company was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Hamilton ended U.S. production in 1969, moving production to a previously acquired Swiss manufacturer’s factory. Hamilton was then acquired in 1974 by SSIH, a predecessor of the Swatch Group.

Around the transition into the 1970s, Hamilton partnered with ElectroData, a Texas tech company, to bring a light-emitting diode (LED) watch to market. Hamilton hyped the LED technology for a few years before releasing its first LED watch in 1972 as a time-only, single button watch. The watch set off a firestorm of media and public interest and was purchased by celebrities and the wealthy who could afford them. While Hamilton spun off the technology to its subsidiary, Time Computer Inc, under the Pulsar brand, they continued releasing LED watches under the Hamilton brand.

LED technology did not utilize a continuous time-display because it quickly drained the batteries. This led to the demise of the Hamilton/Pulsar LED watch as the cheaper Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology allowed for continuous time-display without the battery drain. SSIH sold the Pulsar brand in 1978 to Seiko.
